Tao
Tao is a philosophical concept which developed in ancient
China. The word is used in reference to the true nature of the life,
the world, and existence. However, the force, path, doctrine it describes
is considered nameless. Language is not viewed as capable of truly expressing
the meaning.
The main source of info on Tao and Taoist ideas is the Tao Te Ching.
The true author of this text and when it was created are debated topics.
Tradition dictates that it was written by a sage known as Laozi or Lao
Tzu. This was a Zhou dynasty record-keeper who lived during the 6th
century BC.
While Tao is viewed as being unnamable, there are many characteristics
of it which can be described. For instance it is said that Tao returns.
This means that there it has a cycle of flow and movement without leaving
any emptiness. Another concept of Tao is that its most important workings
are subtle and quiet throughout each day. Many similar aspects are presented
with the Tao Te Ching. To get a true understanding, it is often felt
that the text must be read. Luckily, many online versions may be located
for perusal.
