Yoga meditation
Yoga meditation is one of the oldest aspects of yoga.
In fact, before many of the poses associated with yoga today were developed,
basic seated poses were emphasized for mental focus. The idea was that
the stillness of the body would direct inner concentration.
Hindu philosophy is traditionally divided into six orthodox schools.
Yoga meditation is one of those main schools which in turn became divided
into several branches. These branches include Raja Yoga, Karma Yoga,
Jnana Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga. Hatha Yoga is another branch, but more
of an evolution of Raja Yoga. It is the yoga with which Westerners are
most familiar.
Yoga meditation has many benefits. These include an overall calmness
and control which leads to a reduced level of stress. In addition to
that, the meditation also leads to better sleep. Practitioners also
find themselves less likely to experience depression or anxiety.
