Yoga postitions
Yoga positions are an integral part of Hatha Yoga. This
yoga style is what people of the Western world are commonly referring
to when they used the word “yoga.” It was introduced during
the 15th century by the yoga master, or “yogi,” Swatmarama.
The yoga positions of Hatha Yoga developed from the seated poses of
the older yoga styles. These poses were known as asanas and have been
practiced since before the conception of yoga. The first depiction of
a seated asana was found in the Indus Valley Civilization. It was seen
on a seal which has been dated back to over 4,000 years ago.
The term asanas came to incorporate standing, balancing, as well as
reclining yoga positions due to Hatha Yoga. The expectation was that
the physical focus would lead to a physical purification. This in turn
would allow a person’s mind to be prepared for higher forms of
meditation.
